How to Play the 2048 Number Puzzle Game
The 2048 puzzle game is a simple but deeply strategic number merge challenge, and this free brain puzzle takes a few seconds to learn. You play on a grid of tiles (4×4 by default — see the grid sizes guide for other options). Every move slides all tiles in one direction — up, down, left, or right. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with their combined value. A new tile (2 or 4) appears somewhere on the board after every move.
Your goal is to merge tiles until you create a tile numbered 2048. Along the way, your score grows every time you merge two tiles — the bigger the merge, the more points. The game ends when no more moves are possible: the grid is completely full and no two adjacent tiles share the same value.

Controls
- Desktop: Use the arrow keys (↑ ↓ ← →) or WASD to move tiles in any direction.
- Mobile / tablet: Swipe up, down, left, or right on the game board, or tap the on-screen arrow buttons below the board.
- Undo: Made a bad move? Hit the Undo button to go back one step. You get 3 undo charges per game.
Your progress saves automatically
There's no save button because there doesn't need to be one — your board, score, timer, and undo charges are saved to your browser after every single move. Close the tab, switch to another grid size and come back later, or return tomorrow, and the game picks up exactly where you left off. Daily Challenge and Free Play are kept in completely separate save slots, so playing one never overwrites your progress in the other.
A quick example turn
Say you have two "4" tiles sitting next to each other in the same row. Sliding in their direction merges them into a single "8" tile, and your score increases by 8. A brand-new "2" or "4" tile then appears in a random empty cell. Repeat this, always thinking a couple of moves ahead, and your tiles compound quickly: 2 → 4 → 8 → 16 → 32, and so on, up toward 2048.
